Why it’s good for you: Pork tenderloin is now certified with the American Heart Association “heart check” mark, indicating it qualifies as an extra-lean and heart healthy meat. Additionally, it is an excellent source of protein, B vitamins and zinc.
If you use parchment paper instead of plastic wrap before freezing, you can leave it on the meatloaf while baking it. I always struggled to get the plastic wrap off in one piece. Old cooks can learn new tricks…smile.
WOW! I never had meatloaf but my boyfriend loves it and asked if I can make this for him. I was so nervous because I was unable to find breadcrumbs at the supermarket; therefore, I used Ritz crackers. For the glaze, I added a little bit of honey and Worchestire sauce. We loved it!!! It was moist and the crusting on the top was perfect. I really appreciate this recipe and look forward to making this again.
Here’s a quick “heads up” that may be of interest for those out there that use Oats in this recipe, myself included. Quaker Oats now has “Gluten Free Oats” available. So far I have only seen it in the Quick Cooking Oats variety though. Hoping to find it in the Old Fashioned variety as well.
My family and I love this meatloaf! I was one of those kids who HATED meatloaf growing up, but that was because my mother was a horrible cook, bless her efforts lol. She would never have dreamed of putting a glaze on a meatloaf for fear of extra calories. I have spent years trying to find a recipe that would become the go to recipe for meatloaf and this has definitely become it.
“I’m always on the lookout for low-fat recipes that are scrumptious, too, like this one,” comments Jenny Reece of Lowry, Minnesota. In her dish, quick-cooking chicken breasts get wonderful sweet flavor from pineapple, honey and teriyaki sauce.
Roasted garlic lends a rich flavor to this appetizing chicken entree, and it complements the spinach nicely. Ideal for entertaining, the recipe can be assembled in advance and popped in the oven when guests arrive. —Joanna Johnson, Flower Mound, Texas
Now for proteins you want to focus on clean and lean proteins. So if you do eat animal products you definitely want to be sure to choose organic as often as possible so that you’re avoiding any toxic ingredients like chemicals or growth hormones.
This super-simple recipe makes a crisp-tender chicken with a perfect, sticky glaze. You may (or may not) remember the crispy oven fried chicken I made a couple months ago? Well, this sauce was so good on those chicken pieces, that I wondered what would happen if I cooked some pieces right in the sauce without any crumbing or breading needed.
To date, onions have shown a wealth of beneficial properties; they’re anti-allergic, anti-histaminic, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant, all rolled into one. Onions are especially rich in polyphenol flavonoids called quercetin. Quercetin is an anti-cancer antioxidant that many believe also prevents histamine release–making quercetin-rich foods “natural antihistamines.”
Hi Lynn! I’ve never tried cooking this in the crock pot so I’m not sure. I would say form into a loaf and make sure it doesn’t touch the sides of the crock pot and then maybe cook on low for 6-8 hours, checking often so it don’ts overcook. Let me know if you try it and how it turned out in the crock pot. Thank you!!
Sue: Thanks for sharing this deliciously flavored chicken dinner, Jaclyn! We loved it! I followed the recipe exactly except added mushrooms to skillet at the end. My house smelled wonderful! Chicken looked great on the plate and the sauce was so flavorful! This definitely is company worthy. This can easily be a week night meal. Thanks again! February 15, 2018 at 7:46pm Reply
A great tip I learned. If you don’t have a fancy meatloaf pan. Put 4 slices of white bread in the bottom of your loaf pan. They’ll soak up the excess grease . Then when you take your meatloaf out of the pan (to make this easier I make several strips out of foil and criss cross in the pan over top of the bread) you just throw away the bread and your meatloaf isn’t swimming in grease.
I made this exactly as the recipe called for except I drizzled Diana Sauce on top before cooking and it turned out soooo good!! My boyfriend loves meatloaf but he can be prickly when the stuff he lives isn’t made just right and he loved it so much he ate half of it !!! This will be my new go to meatloaf recipe !
Chicken thighs are much more moist and tender than chicken breasts (although you can check out the recipe notes for how to swap them in!). And when it comes to added flavor, a handful of roasted, salted cashews works wonders to balance out the tangy sweetness of the fresh pineapple, while also lending a bit of crunch to every bite.
“I was never a meatloaf fan, but I substitute Ritz crackers and we love this recipe. My 4 year old son cried when I told him I was making meatloaf.. he ate 4 helpings and now both him and his dad ask for this ATLEAST once a week. The sauce makes it perfect!! And it’s so simple. Definitely a staple in our house!”
Astaxanthin also exhibits beneficial properties that make it useful for heart, eye, and brain health, as well as for alleviating chronic pain. The key to eating fish these days is to choose fish that are high in healthy omega-3 fats, and low in hazardous contaminants. Wild-caught Alaskan salmon (NOT farmed) fits this description, and is one of the few types of fish I still recommend eating.
If your taste buds call for pot roast but your pocketbook insists on ground beef, here’s the perfect solution! You save on cleanup, too, since the meat and veggies cook in the same dish. —Magdalene Fiske, La Farge, Wisconsin
The coating. You need a base and the original recipe calls for mayo. You will see in the comments that even the “mayo haters” love it. You can use a lower fat if you wish. Other similar recipes use yogurt. The yogurt is frequently non-fat.
The possibilities with ground beef are seemingly endless, though you’ll probably want to pay the most attention to cost and fat content. Naturally, the lower the fat content, the higher the price. A leaner meat; however, may not taste as moist and flavorful, so keep that in mind if you’re making a meal that’s prone to dryness (like meatloaf or hamburgers). Sometimes the extra fat can make or break a dish.
Nut lovers don’t have to stick to almonds. These tiny bites pack the same heart-healthy fatty acids that quell hunger hormones and burn belly fat. One study found that swapping healthy unsaturated ones like those found in nuts for saturated fats helped overweight people lose weight without reducing calorie intake or upping their exercise.
Copenhagen comes first in a country where people can pay as much as 60% of their income in taxes. Wiking believes that may be part of the reason. The Nordic countries, says, “have simply been better at converting wealth into wellbeing. We invest in quality of life. Yes, if I paid lower taxes I could afford a bigger car, but that’s not going to bring me happiness. What brings me happiness is knowing that everybody I love and care for is taken care of. That’s the key to understanding Scandinavian happiness. In a sense, I feel the Scandinavian model has removed the price tag on happiness.”
Fresh broccoli sprouts are far more potent than whole broccoli, allowing you to eat far less in terms of quantity. For example, research has revealed that three-day old broccoli sprouts consistently contain anywhere from 10-100 times the amount of glucoraphanin–a chemoprotective compound–found in mature broccoli.

Under the old system, Oliver might have gotten a drug and, possibly, some general psychological guidance and support. But he had never sought mental health treatment before, and he most likely would have gone years before getting any talk therapy because he had no idea it was available. The area where he lives had scores of practicing therapists but no centralized system for ensuring that people got scientifically backed approaches tailored to their specific problem.
Why it’s good for you: Peanut butter is your friend, and you shouldn’t opt for a low-fat version. It’s high in filling fiber and protein, so just a little can go a long way when it comes to satisfying a sweet tooth.
This is really the best meatloaf recipe ever; only thing different that I do for my family is to use 1 and 1/4 pounds of lean ground beef and 1/4 pound of ground pork mixed together. Sooooooooooooo good!
I love cooking my chicken on a rack. You really need to get a rack. For a few dollars, you will become a much better cook. But one that is “oven safe.” Some racks are cooling racks only and have a coating. If your local store does not have them, Amazon will. I will be adding some suggestions to THE SHOP in the next few weeks.
How to eat it: Try the soft kind of tofu that has the consistency of jelly. It’s great raw in salads instead of hard-boiled eggs, and you can slice it and dredge in a little egg wash and pan fry for a great appetizer. Top with soy sauce mixed with sesame oil, green onion and black pepper and if you like it spicy, a little sriracha.
Prepare to be amazed. This 15-minute mug cake-meets-chicken pot pie is a one of the most winning chicken dinners around. You’ll get all the hearty filling, plus the flaky crust — all without dirtying a single pot. Photo and recipe: Carmen Sturdy / Life by Daily Burn
During chilly months, I fix this jambalaya at least once a month. It’s so easy…just chop the vegetables, dump everything in the slow cooker and forget it! Even my sons, who are picky about spicy things, like this dish. —Cindi Coss, Coppell, Texas
